What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a disorder wherein the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus- the endometrium also grows outside the uterus. The tissues can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel and the tissues lining the pelvis. They may also develop beyond the pelvic region.
Like the normal endometrium tissues, they thicken, break down, and bleed with each menstrual cycle. However, they do not have a way to exit the body and get trapped. It may develop cysts called endometriomas.
This abnormal tissue growth also causes:

  • Severe pain during menstrual periods
  • Scar formation
  • Adhesions, wherein the tissues bind the pelvic organs together
  • Infertility

Symptoms of Endometriosis

The typical symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain and cramping, which is often associated with menstrual periods. Some common symptoms include:

  • Painful periods
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Pain with bowel movements or urination
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infertility

Fatigue, constipation, bloating, nausea are some other symptoms that occur during menstrual periods. If you experience any of the symptoms, seek doctor help. An early diagnosis can manage the symptoms better and treat the problem before it gets severe.

How Endometriosis impacts fertility?

Endometriosis is one of the reasons behind infertility in most women. This disorder can impair fertility in two ways-

  • The tissues distort the fallopian tubes so that they become unable to pick up the egg after ovulation.
  • The tissue creates inflammation, adversely affecting the function of the uterus, ovary, fallopian tubes and egg.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Endometriosis

Diagnosis

- Endometriosis is diagnosed through laparoscopy. A slender, tubular endoscope called a laparoscope is inserted into the abdominal wall through a small incision. The tiny camera in the laparoscope transmits images to a video monitor to check the presence of endometriotic tissue.

Treatment

- Treatment is given based on the age of the woman and the symptom and severity of the condition. Although endometriosis has no cure, treatment helps relieve the symptoms and manage the severity. Thus, it does not interfere with your daily life. Endometriosis treatment also helps in getting relief from extreme pain and improves fertility.

Medications to relieve inflammation and ease the pain, hormonal treatments, and surgical removal of tissues are the treatment options available for endometriosis.
