Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure in which the doctors examine the inside of the uterus to diagnose the possible causes of severe bleeding (diagnostic hysteroscopy) and treat it (operative hysteroscopy). The procedure allows inspecting the uterine cavity with access through the cervix with a special device called a hysteroscope.
Hysteroscope is a small device equipped with a small camera and light on one end that allows the doctor to get a clear view inside the uterus. Heavy and longer menstrual flow and bleeding between the periods are the most common reasons to perform hysteroscopy. It may also be needed in the following situations-

• Bleeding after menopause
• Presence of fibroids, polyps, scarring in the uterus
• Frequent miscarriages
• Problem in pregnancy
• Requirement of a tissue sample of the lining of the uterus

How is hysteroscopy performed?

• The doctor will put the patient under anaesthesia and use tools or medications called dilators to open the cervix.
• Now the doctor will insert a hysteroscope through the cervix into the uterus.
• Hysteroscope will provide a clear view of the uterine lining and the opening of the fallopian tube.
